Sony has announced some major changes to its Playstation Plus subscription. The service has been divided into three separate tiers, with the base tier offering the same privileges available with the original Playstation Plus subscription. The new Extra Membership tier secures for fans a selection of PS4 and PS5 games, while the more expensive premium tier also includes a large selection of legacy Playstation titles covering every single legacy console.
This timeless catalog of games includes a selection of titles from the original Playstation, meaning the service will feature some of Sony’s oldest and most popular games. There are countless games that could make the list, from well-known masterpieces to underappreciated cult classics. Here are some of the games that we hope will be on the list.
12 hobo story
Vagrant Story is one of the most unique role-playing games of its era. Developed by Square Enix, the game has been loosely associated with titles like Final Fantasy Tactics, but it’s definitely its own beast, with a combat system that’s much more fluid and action-packed than other Square turn-based games of the time.
Combine this with weapon craftsmanship, great aesthetics, and a dark and engaging story, and you have one of the most underappreciated RPGs on PS1.
11 2 . siphon filter
Prior to Days Gone, Bend Studios were the creators of Siphon Filter, a stealth action series that debuted on the original Playstation. Games star Gabe Logan, a US government special agent tasked with defeating German terrorists and putting an end to the biological weapon that gives the series its name.
Siphon Filter 2 upon its release was praised for its intense storyline and innovations in original gameplay, resulting in more sequels and sub-plots over the years. The inclusion of this classic game in the PS Plus Premium collection of titles could introduce it to a much larger audience of Playstation fans.
10 bloody roar 2
When it comes to retired fighting games, few are held as tightly as Bloody Roar. The 3D fighter was a huge hit in the late ’90s both in arcades and on the original Playstation, as players fell in love with his unique mechanism of allowing each character to transform into a different monster or animal.
The original Bloody Roar is still loved, but Bloody Roar 2 remains a fan favorite and the most requested addition to PS Plus Premium.
9 Mega Man Legends
When a hugely successful game series like Mega Man releases a spin-off with wildly different gameplay mechanics, the results can sometimes get mixed up. This is not the case with Mega Man Legends, the PS1 Action RPG starring the famous blue bomber.
A major departure from the side-scrolling gameplay of the main Mega Man series, this story-based adventure has managed to capture the hearts of fans with its unique mechanics and accessible gameplay, seeing as both the direct and episodic sequel released on the original Sony console.
8 dragon legend
The Legend of Dragoon is the definition of a cult classic. The RPG was released at the heart of the Playstation Final Fantasy renaissance, and its apocalyptic-focused plot and beautiful pre-made environments have surely drawn many comparisons, which say a lot about the level of quality the game is set to achieve.
Regardless of the comparisons, The Legend of Dragoon has managed to stand out to its ardent fan base, with its unconventional combat system in particular which sets it apart from other RPGs. Its combination of turn-based battles and timing-based button commands made for a surprisingly unique experience. In an era filled with excellent role-playing games, The Legend of Dragoon has managed to stand out.
7 Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
The Castlevania series is one of the most popular gaming properties. It dates back to the days of Super Nintendo, but Symphony of the Night on PS1 is arguably a fan favorite. Breaking with the series’ tradition of putting a member of the Belmont family in the lead role, the game stars Alucard, the rebellious and powerful son of Dracula.
As the offspring of the world’s most powerful vampire, you are equipped with an array of attacks, abilities, and weapons that will help you explore Dracula’s castle and defeat hordes of living enemies. This undeniable classic has not lost its replay value to this day.
6 eve parasite
Parasite Eve is another departure from the typical Square Enix fair. The game is a sequel to Hideaki Sena’s novel of the same name, a horror-themed action RPG set in New York City in the aftermath of a horrific and disastrous event.
You play as Aya Priya, a local police officer tasked with investigating the crisis. With its real-time combat system and mature themes, this action-packed title was far ahead of its era, being a huge hit on Playstation and spawning two series as well as a manga adaptation.
5 Final Fantasy 9
There are a number of excellent Final Fantasy titles available on the original Playstation, and some consider it the series’ golden age, if not the greatest era of RPG in general. And while Final Fantasy 7 is the most popular title from this period, Final Fantasy 9 deserves a place in this catalog.
Often referred to as the culmination of the PS1 era of Final Fantasy titles, 9 is packed with much that made this particular trilogy of headlines stand out, while also listening to the series’ classics with its medieval setting and story. It will also help to increase the importance of the game before it is adapted with animation.
4 Survey 2097
Wipeout is one of the most popular racing game series in the history of Playstation. The fast-paced futuristic titles hold a huge place in the hearts of many fans, and Wipeout 2097 is one of the most popular entries in the series.
As a sequel to the original Wipeout, the game expands on its predecessor in almost every way, with tighter controls, better graphics, and more content.
3 Baraba the rapper
Parappa the Rapper deserves to be included in this group based on its uniqueness alone. Not often players are treated to a narrative hip-hop-themed rhythm game starring an anthropomorphic dog and his sunflower girlfriend.
The game is very strange, but it also works, with a charming presentation and songs that will be addictive and will stick in your head for weeks. This is worth a try for any PlayStation fan.
2 Final Fantasy Tactics
Part of the main Final Fantasy family of games, Final Fantasy Tactics was the series’ first foray into turn-based strategy. The game was met with widespread acclaim, and many still consider it one of the best games in the entire franchise.
Deep knowledge of the game and world building also helped bring the land of Ivalice to life, to the point where many of the other Square Enix titles took place in the region, such as Final Fantasy 12 and the aforementioned Vagrant Story. There are even references to the game in Ivalice’s version of Final Fantasy 14.
1 Smart Qube
The Intelligent Qube is a title that not every Playstation fan will be familiar with, but those who know will adore it. An intense puzzle game that puts you in control of a little man standing on a tall platform made up of multiple rows of cubes (qubes?). As each level starts, the cubes will rise towards the back end of the platform and start moving towards you, one row at a time.
Your task is to delete these cubes one by one before you are crushed by them. This is made more difficult by the threat that blocks that are meant to be deleted will reach the end of the platform, deleting a single row of blocks you’re standing on and limiting your space to move. Addictive gameplay, artistic presentation, and excellent soundtrack make this a true hidden gem that deserves a place in this collection.
