Will Mourinho complete his collection of awards?
Jose Mourinho, who was not used to expressing his feelings, cried after Roma qualified for the final: “I shed a tear because my feelings were with everyone who loves this club. It is a giant club without the cup room to match it.”
Roma have yet to win the major European Cup – they were European Cup runners-up in 1984 and lost in the 1991 European Cup final – but Mourinho has plenty: two Champions Leagues (with Porto in 2004 and Inter in 2010) and two. UEFA Cup/European League (Porto 2003, Manchester United 2017). If they win the UEFA Europa Conference League Cup, “Special One” will have won all three of UEFA’s major club competitions.
…or will Feyenoord be the first?
Strangely enough, Feyenoord is looking to complete the same group as Mourinho. He won the UEFA Champions League when it was still the European Cup in 1970, and took home the UEFA Cup, which became the UEFA Europa League, in 1974 and 2002.
If they can smash Mourinho’s dream, then Rotterdam will be the first club to win the top three UEFA men’s competition titles.
Tammy Abraham told UEFA.com that Mourinho convinced him to leave Chelsea for Italy this summer, asking: “Would you rather stay in rainy England or come to sunny Rome?” The move proved a winning one thus far, as the 24-year-old scored more than 20 goals in all competitions in his first campaign, including nine in the UEFA Europa League.
The only player to have more in this new competition is Feyenoord’s Cyriel Dessers, who has scored ten goals since the start of the group stage. “Who would have thought at the beginning of the season that we would reach a European final?” said the striker, who joined the club on loan in August from Genk in his native Belgium. “It’s incredible.”
Meeting promises to be tight
Roma and Feyenoord have met before, with long-time midfielder Jens Tornstra among the players involved when FC Rotterdam lost to the Giallorossi 3-2 on aggregate in the round of 32. UEFA Europa League 2014/15. However, the Europa League final is a game on another level.
Feyenoord reached the final without losing since the start of the group stage (8V 4N). Rome’s record, on the other hand, is 7V, 3N and 2D. Unlike Rome, Rotterdam actually came to Tirana; They tied 0-0 with Partizani in the first round of the 1991/92 Cup Winners’ Cup at the Kemal Staffa Stadium, which was destroyed to build the National Stadium.
When and where do you see the conference league final?
The final match of the season will be held at the National Arena in Tirana. The match will start on Wednesday, May 25 at 9:00 pm.
