Fantasy is a big thing, especially in the wake of Game of Thrones and especially on Netflix. Streamers spent huge amounts of money trying to discover the fantasy genre. Results? No big deal like Game of Thrones, but there are plenty of very interesting TV shows.
With all that said, here are our picks for the best fantasy shows on Netflix. If you are looking for fantasy movies, head.
The Witcher (2019—)
When I first heard that Henry Cavill had been cast as Geralt on The Witcher TV show, which is based on a novel that became a very popular video game, I thought, “This can’t be good.”
Then I watched the first episode and thought ‘This no good.”
But then, in the end the show was somehow good? Then it became apparent. It is now one of the most popular shows on Netflix.
It’s hard to believe I have two video game shows on my list here. Arcane is just a good thing.
Based on League of Legends characters and lore, Arcane is just a very nice animated show about family, trauma and the impact of poverty. Just an amazingly good show to look at.
Shadow and Bone (2021 -)
Shadow and Bone is based on a series of youth fantasy novels written by Lee Bardugo. There is a feeling that this show was not the case so far As good as some had hoped, it didn’t so far It moved into the mainstream as some predicted. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t check it out.
Sweet Tooth (2021-)
Sweet Tooth is a fantasy drama based on the comic book of the same name. After the pandemic – stay with me here – crossbreeds are born half human and half animal.
As you might expect, a split appears. Some people just can’t handle the emergence of this new hybrid and blame them for the pandemic. The show has been renewed for a second season, so now is the time to play catch-up.
As a Scotsman, I am grateful for and upset with the Outlander.
It made the Scottish guys kind of cool again, but also gave people very huge and unfair expectations of us. We can’t hope to compete with Sam Heughan, who plays main character Jamie Fraser. silly.
Outlander is a bizarre time travel show that takes main character Claire back in time from World War II to Scotland in 1743. It’s definitely a nonsense romance novel, but it’s a no-nonsense romance novel. It was built for gluttony.
Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005-2008)
Avatar: The Last Airbender has to be one of the best anime shows Ever. Aang is the last name Airbender, a type of messiah who can control the four main elements: air, fire, water, and earth.
But even trying to describe what makes Avatar so charming, smart, and surprisingly heavy is pointless. Just do yourself a favor and watch it
Well let’s do this again…
I can’t believe I have three TV shows based on video games are on this list! But again, Castlevania is very good. A dark fantasy show based on the video game of the same name, Castlevania is hugely popular, compelling, and amazingly vibrant. Give it a chance, even if you haven’t heard of it before.
The Legend of Korra (2012-2014)
I can’t put Avatar on the list without adding The Legend of Korra.
Set in the same universe, The Legend of Korra, years after the events of the original Avatar, is a much more adult version of the show, and deals with surprisingly mature themes. It has been greatly underestimated. Watch this.
Demon Slayer (2019—)
Weekly Shonen Jump
Can I get away with adding animations to this list? Sorry, I do that.
Chances are, if you’re a fan of the anime, you’re already watching Demon Slayer or, at least, aware of its existence. At the moment, it is probably the most popular anime on the planet. Demon Slayer is basically a show about a man who kills demons. Misrepresentation: His sister is also a part of Satan, and they travel together. It’s beautifully animated and ballistic combat scenes.
Attack on Titan (2013-2022)
Since we’re making the anime now, we might as well do Attack on Titan.
Attack on Titan is an anime set in a mysterious medieval world where humans are constantly under threat from human “titans” the size of a skyscraper who eats humans.
He’s totally crazy. You must watch it.
Dragon Prince (2018—)
The Dragon Prince is often compared favorably with another legendary show on this list – Avatar.
This is as much praise as you can get for an animated fantasy show.
The Dark Crystal: The Age of Resistance (2019)
Kevin Baker / Netflix
Based on the 1982 cult classic, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance was just too good for exercising a taste of nostalgia. Unfortunately, production expenses caused Netflix to cancel it before the second season. Not that you can’t check first.
In a BBC television show based on Arthur’s legends, Merlin adds Doctor Who’s aesthetic to the fantasy genre.
It’s a little outdated, sure, but Merlin has a cult following thanks to some great performances. Just don’t expect production values at the Game of Thrones level.
Sabrina’s Creepy Adventures (2018-2020)
Gonzalo Jimenez / CNET
Based on the old children’s sitcom Sabrina The Teenage Witch, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina reinvents itself as a dark drama focusing on occultism. It works miraculously.
Prepare yourself for a weird ending, but this show delivers.
