Villarreal is preparing for the Europa League final against Manchester United on Wednesday evening in Gdansk. The Spanish club is also called the Yellow Submarine. Here’s why.
This title goes back to the 1967/68 season, when Villarreal was fighting for promotion to the Spanish third tier (the sponsor team reached La Liga only in 1998/99).
During a match, a group of fans stationed behind a goal played a Beatles song from the K7 player and, in reference to the color of their team’s jersey, tweaked the lyrics “Amarillo es el Villarreal / amarillo es / amarillo es” (Villarreal play in yellow, they play in color yellow).
Another anecdote, Villarreal traveled to Liverpool last summer to face rivals Reds Everton in a friendly match that won 2-1. A large number of players took the opportunity to visit the famous Cavern Club, where the Beatles held their first concerts.
Other semi-finalists’ titles
Liverpool – Reds
The Reds actually played blue and white until they adopted the city’s colors in 1894. The choice to add shorts and socks came in 1964 when manager Bill Shankly thought a full red uniform would be more threatening to opponents and would symbolize danger.
Manchester City – Nationals, Sky Blues
The word “citizens” is an extension of a city (club members are also called Cityzens); “Sky Blues” means “sky blue,” referring to the color of the shirt.
Real Madrid – Meiring
It all started when a radio commentator compared white jerseys to white shirts. A British reporter from The Times also gave birth to another smaller, lesser known name: Vikingos. He then compared Real Madrid’s 7-3 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt in the 1960 European Cup final in Glasgow to Vinking’s conquest of Europe.
