Why was Mari Satomi the best girl of all time

hit shounen series Kakigurui Puts a new twist on the high school anime trope. The main characters are the students at the elite Hyakkou Academy, where they learn how to navigate the dangerous waters of high stakes gambling and games of chance. The heroine is Yumiko Jabami, but this does not necessarily mean that she is the best girl.

It takes a lot to be a ‘Best Boy or Girl’ series, and while Yumeko is an exciting and unforgettable heroine, her character is relatively slim. By contrast, her rival and friend Marie Saotome can easily be considered KakiguruiBest girl, as she checks nearly every box that is required, from her persistence and courage to her seamless storyline and strong presence in the series.

Marie Saotome’s underdog character arc in Kakegurui

Despite not being the general protagonist Kakigurui, secondary character Mari Saotome has a proper shonen protagonist arc, starting with her initial defeat at the hands of Yumiko. When it first appeared so early KakiguruiMarie was comfortable in her position at Hyako and was shining with her moderate success.

Her defeat pushed her down the steps, and suddenly she had everything to gain and almost nothing to lose. This launched her own Ark character, and Marie grew both as a player and as a person as she rose to not only reclaim her old position, but to transcend it and reach the top. In doing so, Marie became more of a personality and was defined by more than just her arrogant confidence.

Once Marie started in this arc, she became more vulnerable and had to challenge herself to become stronger and better, as well as being more honest about her abilities and her position in Hyako. The character arc also helped Marie realize that she is not meant to play by the rules of the Student Council, but to break the board and destroy the complex but delicate energy system that maintains it.

Mary experienced hope, crushing defeat, optimism, victory, extreme stress, and more during this arc, conquering her fears throughout. Mary also proved to be brave and ambitious, but not cruel, and she finished the little power games she used to play. Ironically, being an ambitious rebel also made her kinder, bringing her character even closer.

Mary’s position in the story

Marie Saotome in kakegurui

Marie Saotome is known not only for her shonen-style arc and growth, but also through her relationship with her friends and rivals, such as Yumiko Jabami and Ryota Suzue. For Mari, Ryota is just an accessory – a classmate who sometimes helps Yumiko without even realizing it. Marie doesn’t think much of him, but she’s willing to collaborate with him on games, proving that she’s no longer completely alone in this dog-eating school. More than that, Marie knows about her relationship with Yumiko Jabami – her best friend and fiercest rival – and this brings out the best in her.

Mari prefers order and logic, and Yumeko is all about rush and chaos, making her like the Joker and Batman, and they play well against each other. However, this fascinating dynamic brings out Marie’s personality more than she does in Yumiko, as Yumiko is simply her usual self, while her nature brings out Mari’s fierce, healthy competitive side.

Marie created herself KakiguruiBest girl by declaring Yumiko her friend and foe, and by growing as a character while helping Yumiko and plotting her downfall. Marie is many things at once during this character, from rival and schemer to ally and teammate, but most of all, she’s the best girl. She truly thrived when Yumiko and Ryota entered her life, and she will stop at nothing to become Hyako’s best student – and a better human too.
